How does fluorescence work?

A description of what fluorescence is and its connection to variety of topics and disciplines of everyday life and science.

Understanding the series of transitions that results in certain objects and molecules appearing fluorescent. Fluorescence has numerous modern day applications from quantum dots in plasma TVs to nanotechnology and chemistry, to microbiology, medicine and forensics. Fluorescence is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light of different frequency, for example an object absorbs light in the UV region and emits light in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
