Didactic experiment: homemade thermometer

Thermometres are instruments used to measure the temperature and the usual are those containing colorated alcohol or a liquid called mercury inside that dilates or contracts with changes in temperature. With this experiment we will learn how to build a homemade thermometer and we will understand how it works.

The experiment: For this experiment you will need a disposable bottle of half liter, dye or ink, transparent glass tube, plasticine, a bowl, water and a stove. First, fill half of the bottle with water and add a few drops of dye to color the water. Then, drill a hole in the bottle cap and insert the plastic tube. After that, is very important to cover the bottle and seal the hole with plasticine so that the air doesn't scape. To conclude and see how our homemade thermometer works we should bring the bottle to the stove to observe how the colored water raises as the temperature increases.
