Cabbage Indicator Experiment

Understanding how an acid-base indicator works in real life situations and how to make one at home.

Purple of Red cabbage can change color when exposed to solutions of different pH. Traditionally students are exposed to isolated indicator molecules such as litmus, phenolphthalein and universal indicator that change color during titrations. Students are rarely shown that indicators are simple molecules that exist in real life situations. The purple cabbage experiment is a great way to show how chemistry is not just a subject they have to learn in school but has real life application!
